Happy New Year!
I was happy just to finish 2016. It was a difficult year in so many ways and I feel that most people probably agree. I cannot change the things that have made this year so hard, but I can look to my own habits and try to change myself to reduce the negativity around me. Since I love new beginnings, I was anxious to write my resolutions and get busy on improving my life. I do not write a long list of resolutions, but concentrate on just one or two. This year I have chosen 2 resolutions that will improve my life and the lives of the people around me. Another thing I try to keep in mind with resolutions is that small steps add up to big results, but it all takes time.
I had a difficult time coming up with a positive way to state my first resolution. I don’t like negative rules like “Don’t talk when the teacher is talking,” but prefer the language to be more proactive such as, “Listen quietly during instructions.” I admit that I am a procrastinator who sometimes lives on the edge when deadlines approach. I finally came up with “Work in a timely manner.” Of course, this is a lifelong work in progress, but worthy of the effort.
My other goal developed out of the year of mean tweets, misinformation, and general negativity and fear. I am going to work hard to remove judgment from my conversations. On a personal note I realized that my granddaughter in 5th grade, who is sensitive to what is said to her, has thought I made some judgments about her which were never intended. It is time to look at my language and work hard to speak truths without evaluation. This is going to be more difficult in a world which makes constant evaluations about people, events, and situations. I am going to delve more deeply into the works of Marshall Rosenberg who started the Center for Nonviolent Communication. I came across him while researching material on compassionate classrooms. His work spoke to my heart and so I will read on.
Do you have any resolutions for the year? Whether you write down the resolutions as I do, or simply hope for a better year, I want you to know that we are in this together. I hope for the best for all of us as the year unfolds and that the world is better because we worked to make it so.
